Aroma ARC-914SBD Review: Best Under $50 (And the 3 Trade-Offs I Noticed)

The Aroma ARC-914SBD (450W, $35 to $48) is what I would pick if I needed an ultra-budget rice cooker under $50, because it includes digital buttons for White Rice, Brown Rice, Flash Rice, and a 15-hour Delay Timer instead of a clumsy one-switch lever. Looking closely at its design, though, three trade-offs stand out to me: its "8-Cup" box label means only 4 uncooked cups, its inner lid does not snap off for washing, and steam on the lid can drip onto the rim and leave the edge rice soggy (bechabecha).

Why I'd pick this

Students and casual rice eaters on a strict entry-level budget who want digital brown rice and delay-timer buttons instead of a one-switch lever pot.

When I'd pass on it

Daily rice eaters who keep rice warm for more than 3 hours or who hate condensation water dripping onto the rim when opening the lid.

Trade-off I noticed: The box says "8 cups" (which is only 4 uncooked cups), the light nonstick pot scratches easily, the inner lid does not snap off, and steam drips onto the outer edge of the rice.

The 3 Compromises of a $40 Rice Cooker

1. "8 Cups Cooked" is only 4 cups uncooked: Japanese and Korean brands always rate size in uncooked 180 ml go cups. Aroma advertises cooked rice volume. If you pour 6 uncooked cups of rice into the ARC-914SBD, it will boil over. Use my Capacity Calculator to check the size you really need.
2. Lid steam drip (bechabecha rim) and fixed inner lid: Because the ARC-914SBD costs under $50, it has no upper lid heater and its inner lid plate is permanently attached. Steam collects on the cooler lid and can run down onto the outer ring of rice when you open it.
3. Light nonstick coating and short keep-warm time: Never rinse rice inside the thin Aroma pot with a metal strainer or rough sponge, or the coating will scratch. Also, serve or freeze leftover rice within 2 to 3 hours on Keep-Warm before the bottom turns hard (kachikochi).

Reviewer's note: Why lid drip made me switch to Zojirushi:

With my old 3-go cooker, no matter how fast I fluffed the rice when it finished, steam dripping from the lid left the rice around the edge soggy (bechabecha / ベチャベチャ) and ruined the taste. With my Zojirushi NL-EAC18BA, no water from the steam drips onto the rice, and the rice never turns rock-hard (kachikochi / カチコチ) on keep-warm.
